Meifu Shinkage Ryu

History

Meifu Shinkage Ryu was founded in 1960 by Someya Chikatoshi. Chikatoshi was born 1923 and descended form a Samurai family in Chiba prefecture, where today families still bear the name Someya. In his martial arts studies, Chikatoshi’s most favourable was the Shurikenjutsu, which lead him to study Katori Shinto Ryu, and particularly the Shurikenjutsu from Sugino Yoshio Sensei. The school of Katori Shinto is one of the oldest Japanese martial arts still taught today. At just under the age of twenty he was drafted for active service during the Second World War where he served as a Surgeon. After the war he worked as a practising physician in Tokyo. He continued his studies in Shurikenjutsu along with a few other Ryuha. After many years he founded his own school that taught Shurikenjutsu, which he named Meifu Shinkage Ryu (MSR). Prior to Someya Sensei’s death in 1999 he named Otsuka Yasuyuki as his successor in 1995. Otsuka Sensei has headed the school since that time.
